About Our Foundation

Our Work

Wildlife Rehabilitation

The state of Mississippi permits us to rescue and rehabilitate native wildlife, and we specialize in North American Beavers. Through social media, public outreach, education and research, humans can learn to live side-by-side with these ecosystem heroes.

The Beaver Sanctuary

Beavers require complex care, housing, time and labor to be successfully rehabilitated for release. All rescued beavers are released on our private property, a safe haven from harmful human impact while protecting Mississippi's critical wetland ecosystems.

Who We Are

The Muraco family has dedicated their lives to animal rescue. Together with invaluable supporters and volunteers, we strive to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Mississippi's native wildlife, with a special focus on the North American Beaver.

Our Approach to Safeguarding Rescue Beavers

To accomplish our mission, we have developed a 3-phase program.

The sanctuary
Phase 1

Phase 1

We have built a protected, fenced area with 360° enclosures serving the special requirements for orphaned and/or sick beavers to grow up and/or recover from illness. The typical timeframe for beavers to live in these fully protected enclosures is 2 years.

Phase 2

Phase 2

A pond has been designed and built along with approximately 3 acres of natural habitat for a “soft release.” This area remains somewhat protected, a lodge is provided along with daily food provisions. Beavers live here until they show proper instincts and predator-avoidance behaviors.

Phase 3

Phase 3

Full release into The Beaver Sanctuary land. Beavers are released on the 2-acre pond with adjoining wetlands. A lodge is provided until they build their own. Beavers are tagged, monitored and studied to better understand behavior, territory and ecosystem changes.

Petunia Heart Project

Orphaned baby beavers are fragile. After losing precious baby Petunia in 2024 we suspect an underlying heart condition. Basic beaver heart rates are not known, the Petunia Heart Project will monitor and record beaver heart data for publication.
